Dealing with an error on a tax return

On Behalf of | Mar 3, 2024 | tax law |

Filing income tax returns in Illinois often comes with much paperwork, which can leave one feeling overwhelmed. Some individuals and small business owners may choose to complete their tax returns without professional assistance. While many individuals can complete their tax returns without issues, others may run into problems, leading them to make errors on their tax returns. Errors are not necessarily a major concern, but they must be dealt with properly according to taxation laws.

Correcting an error

Errors on tax return forms can often delay processing. When there is an error on a state or federal tax return, it must be corrected on time. In most cases, an individual or business owner will receive a letter detailing the issue at hand and describing how it should be addressed. Some errors will require a taxpayer to file an amended return.

Amended returns are required when the error is related to filing status, income, deductions, credits, or tax liability. An amended return can usually be filed electronically, and the process is like the initial filing. The status of one’s amended return can be checked online after three weeks past the filing date. It’s important to note that amended returns should not be filed before the original return has been processed.

Help with tax issues

While some tax concerns are simple to remedy, others may require legal assistance. The legalities surrounding taxation are complex and can be difficult to navigate without help. Illinois residents who need assistance with tax-related concerns can benefit from seeking legal advice, so they’re informed on how best to remedy the issues at hand.
